Sungsang IV is located at Musi River estuary, administratively in Banyuasin regency, South Sumatra Province. More than 85% of village area is allocated as protected forest and national park, mostly cover by mangrove. This village is appointed as potential tourism village by the local and national government due to its given natural and cultural potential. Coastal community at Sungsang IV, majority is fisherman family, is living side-by-side with mangrove ecosystem that continuously at risk due to agricultural and infrastructure development in the surrounding. CIFOR-ICRAF, in collaboration with Sriwijaya University and the South Sumatra Watershed Forum (Forum DAS Sumsel) have been implementing a participatory action research project in the village to develop mangrove ecotourism, tree adoption and other community-based business models for mangrove restoration. The project runs for four years (2021-2025) and is supported by the Singapore-based Temasek Foundation. The community-based mangrove restoration activities comprise mangrove replanting and enrichment planting, especially with native species in Sungsang such as Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, Rhizophora mucronata, Kandelia candel, Excoecaria agallocha, Sonneratia alba, Sonneratia caseolaris, and Avicennia marina.
